The occasional sightings of the sambar, wild dog, Malabar giant squirrel and the flying squirrel add on further to the beauty of the place. The lack of large animals is compensated by a plethora of birds which begin with the Malabar Grey Hornbill and the Malabar Pied Hornbill. The list goes on further to the flycatchers, orioles, babblers and the shama. The flying lizard can be seen very frequently in these forests. The Hornbill Trio Ganeshgudi is home to the beautiful hornbills. The birds are found in three different species: the first being the Malabar grey hornbill, the second the Malabar pied hornbill and the last one is the great Indian hornbill. The Malabar grey hornbill is found predominantly in the western ghats and other hills attached to the Sahyadris in south India. These birds have a large beak but lack the casque which is found in some other hornbill species. They move around in small groups and feed on figs and other forest fruits; their loud cackling call makes them familiar to the people of the region. The great Indian hornbill is one of the large members of the hornbill family and is found in south and southeast Asia. The bird is impressive in size and colour and holds an important place in many tribal cultures and rituals.
