Gir National Park

The Gir Forest National Park (also known as Sasan – Gir,) is a forest and wildlife sanctuary near Talala Gir in Gujarat, India. Established in 1965, with a total area of 1,412 sq. kms. It’s  the sole home of the Asiatic lions in the wilderness, and its considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its biodiversity. The Gir Jungle Trail is a paradise for animal lovers where you can find different types of species besides the famous Asiatic lions. The ecosystem of Gir, with its diverse flora and fauna, is protected as a result of the efforts of the government forest department, wildlife activists and NGOs. Indiscriminate hunting by the people of Junagarh led to their decrease in lion population drastically, while they were completely wiped out from the other parts of Asia. It was the kind effort of Nawabs of Junagarh who protected the queen royalty in his own private hunting grounds. Later in due course of time Department of Forest Officials came forward to protect the world’s most threatened species. Sasan Gir has arranged open jeeps, the only way to exploring the Gir Jungle Trail for wildlife enthusiasts which are operated by professionals.
