South India Safari Trail (Bangalore, Mysore, Kabini & Wayanad)

Kabini, nestled in Karnataka’s Nagarhole National Park, is a wildlife haven known for its lush forests and the meandering Kabini River. It is one of the best places in India to spot leopards and the elusive black panther, along with elephants, tigers, and diverse bird species. The serene backwaters and jungle safaris make it a perfect destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Wayanad, a lush green paradise in Kerala, is known for its misty hills, dense forests, and rich wildlife. Home to Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, it offers sightings of elephants, tigers, and exotic bird species amidst its unspoiled natural beauty. With scenic waterfalls, ancient caves, and spice plantations, Wayanad is a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.

Day 1: 

Arrive in Bangalore and drive to Mysore (approx. 3-4 hours). En route, visit Srirangapatna, the historical island town known for Tipu Sultan’s summer palace. Upon arrival in Mysore, check-in at the hotel and explore the Mysore Palace, followed by a visit to the bustling Devaraja Market. In the evening, witness the illuminated palace or visit the Brindavan Gardens for the musical fountain show. Overnight stay in Mysore.

 

Day 2: 

After breakfast, visit Chamundi Hill Temple for panoramic views of Mysore. Later, explore St. Philomena’s Church and the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion. Post lunch, drive to Kabini (approx. 2.5-3 hours). Arrive at your wildlife lodge and relax amidst nature. Enjoy an evening nature walk or a documentary on the wildlife of Kabini. Overnight stay in Kabini.

 

Day 3: 

Begin the day with an early morning jungle safari in Nagarhole National Park, known for its rich biodiversity, including tigers, leopards, elephants, and a variety of bird species. Return to the lodge for breakfast and leisure time. In the afternoon, embark on a boat safari along the Kabini River, offering opportunities to spot crocodiles, birds, and wildlife along the riverbanks. Evening at leisure with a bonfire. Overnight in Kabini.

 

Day 4: 

Enjoy another early morning safari for a chance to witness more wildlife encounters. After breakfast, relax at the lodge or explore a nearby tribal village for cultural insights. Later in the afternoon, go for a guided nature walk or opt for a coracle ride on the river. Evening at leisure with storytelling sessions or stargazing. Overnight in Kabini.

 

Day 5: 

Post breakfast, drive to Wayanad (approx. 4-5 hours), a picturesque hill station in Kerala. En route, stop at Edakkal Caves to see prehistoric rock carvings. Check-in at the resort in Wayanad and relax. Evening at leisure, enjoying the serene surroundings. Overnight stay in Wayanad.

 

Day 6: 

After breakfast, visit the breathtaking Meenmutty or Soochipara Waterfalls, where you can enjoy short treks amidst lush forests. Later, explore the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on a jeep safari, spotting elephants, deer, and other wildlife. Return to the resort for a relaxing evening. Overnight stay in Wayanad.

 

Day 7:

Begin the day with a visit to Banasura Sagar Dam, one of the largest earthen dams in India, where you can enjoy boating. Later, head to Pookode Lake for a peaceful paddleboat ride. Post lunch, visit the scenic viewpoint of Lakkidi, offering breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. Evening at leisure at the resort. Overnight in Wayanad.

 

Day 8:

Explore the tea and coffee plantations of Wayanad with a guided plantation tour. Visit a spice garden to learn about Kerala’s famous spices. Post lunch, visit the ancient Thirunelli Temple, nestled in the Brahmagiri Hills. Spend the evening relaxing at the resort or exploring local markets. Overnight in Wayanad.

 

Day 9: 

Enjoy a leisurely morning at the resort, followed by an optional trek to Chembra Peak (for those interested in adventure) or a relaxed visit to the Karlad Lake for kayaking. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the natural surroundings and resort amenities. Overnight in Wayanad.

 

Day 10:

After breakfast, drive to Calicut (approx. 3-4 hours) for departure. Depending on your flight/train schedule, explore Calicut’s key attractions like Beypore Beach, the historic Kappad Beach, or try the famous Malabar cuisine before heading to the airport or railway station for your onward journey.

Things to carry: Face Mask and Pocket Hand Sanitizers are must during the Safaris.

  • Carry your id proof given at the time of booking the safaris (compulsory).
  • Comfortable loose clothing, preferably cotton and full sleeves for summers
  • Warm Clothes, Gloves for Chilly early morning safaris.
  • Muted color clothes, which blend with the surroundings, no loud colors.
  • Sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn and tan.
  • Mosquito repellant / Odomos to protect from insect bites.
  • Reusable bottle of water, since we discourage the use of plastic/ disposable bottles.
  • Light quick bites like peppermints, nutribars etc. for long safaris. Nothing liquid or semi-liquid to be carried.
  • Comfortable footwear, preferably sports shoes.
  • Personal medication, if any.
  • Portable easy to carry torch.
  • Binoculars are helpful for distant sightings and birding.
  • If you are carrying a camera, please carry spare memory card and battery.
  • A Bandanna or a Scarf is helpful to protect yourself from sun.
  • Good comfortable hat / cap as you will be wearing it for a long time
  • Pocket diary and pen to make notes of the sightings and behavior.
