About the Forest

Bandhavgarh, located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, with an area of 105 km2, was declared a national park in 1968. The buffer is spread over the forest divisions of Umaria and Katni, and totals 820 km2. The three main zones of the national park are Tala, Magdhi and Khitauli. Tala is the richest zone in terms of biodiversity, mainly tigers. Together, these three ranges comprise the ‘Core’ of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

Apart from tigers, the park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. It houses various species of mammals, including leopards, sloth bears, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, and spotted deer, among others. The park also hosts over 250 species of birds, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers.

The park holds historical and archaeological significance, with ancient ruins and cave shrines scattered throughout the area. The Bandhavgarh Fort, perched atop a hill within the park, is a prominent attraction that offers stunning views of the surroundings.

Bandhavgarh National Park’s combination of abundant wildlife, archaeological wonders, and breathtaking landscapes make it a must-visit destination for those seeking an unforgettable wildlife and nature experience in India.

Wildlife

One of the biggest attractions of this national park is the tiger and its sightings. Bandhavgarh has a very high density of tigers within the folds of its jungles. There is a saying about the Park that goes: “In any other park, you are lucky if you see a tiger. In Bandhavgarh, you are unlucky if you don’t see (at least) one.” The reserve is also densely populated with other species such as sloth bear, dhole (wild dog), leopard, chausingha (small four-horned antelope), chital, nilgai, the occasional wolf, gaur, wild boars, chinkaras, rhesus macaques, black faced langurs, jungle cats, hyenas, porcupines, jackals, foxes and ratels, among others.

Central India is rich in bird life and receives migrants from all over. Bandhavgarh, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is an excellent bird habitat. The diverse terrain is home to some of the most magnificent avian species. The bird life is also abundant (over 150 species); one can see paradise fly catchers, golden-and black-headed orioles, purple sunbirds, red-vented bulbuls, white browed fantails, steppe eagles, green pigeons, white rumped shama, grey malabar hornbills, pied malabar hornbills (quite a rare sighting), plum-headed parakeets,  rose-ringed parakeets, blue bearded bee-eaters, green bee-eaters, white bellied drongos, owls, Jerdon’s and gold fronted leaf birds, minivets, woodshrikes etc.

The best period for birding is in winters when migrants arrive. But summer birding is equally good since sightings increase in dry canopy.
