JungleTrail, an organization born out of the passion for wildlife, was founded by a group of professionals from diverse fields.
Wake up to Himalayan Brown Bears at Drenmo Lodge, the first wildlife-focused lodge in western Ladakh. Located in the Mushkow Valley, a prime bear habitat, the lodge offers cozy rooms with modern comforts. Explore Ladakh’s stunning landscapes and learn about Brown Bear conservation with expert local guides. Whether you’re a wildlife lover or adventurer, Drenmo Lodge promises an unforgettable experience.
Ladakh’s Trans-Himalayan landscape, from barren plateaus to the lush terrain beyond Namika La, leads to Drass, the “Second Coldest Inhabited Place in the World.” Despite harsh winters, Drass is rich in wildlife, home to Golden Eagles, Musk Deer, Himalayan Grey Wolves, and the rare Himalayan Brown Bear. In summer, wildflowers and over 50 medicinal plants thrive, making Drass a unique biodiversity hotspot.
Day 1: Arrival & Orientation
Arrive at Drenmo Lodge, Drass from Srinagar or Leh and check in by the afternoon. Enjoy a briefing and orientation session by the Tour Leader and Spotter, followed by lunch and rest. In the evening, embark on your first bear sighting session, followed by high tea, snacks, and dinner.
Day 2: Brown Bear Tracking & Birding
Start early with morning bear sightings, followed by breakfast at the lodge. Enjoy a Mushkow River walk and an outdoor lunch (weather permitting) while scanning for bears in the valleys. Post lunch, take a wildlife and landscape excursion to Manman Top, followed by an evening bear tracking session, film screening, and a relaxing dinner.
Day 3 & 4: Intensive Bear Tracking & Excursions
Begin each day with early Brown Bear tracking. Post breakfast, either hike or drive to adjacent hillsides for better vantage points, accompanied by expert spotters. Depending on sightings, enjoy a picnic lunch or return to the lodge. Explore nearby valleys such as Umba La, Pandrass, Matayen, Shimsha Kharbu, Suru, and Karkitchu’s apricot orchards. Alternatively, opt for a cultural excursion to Kargil, visiting Hondurman Heritage Village and the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum. Evening tracking sessions conclude with dinner and a briefing.
